Diplodia Ear Rot in Indiana/Illinois Fields
Dr. Dick Bohling, Fielder’s Choice Direct Manager of Agronomic Services participated in an American Seeds, Inc. Crop Tour in Indiana and Illinois. Dr. Bohling observed Diplodia ear rot in several of the fields the Crop Tour visited. When the husks were peeled back, a dense white to grayish white mold was found at the base of the ear. In a few cases of later development, the husks were difficult to remove and the entire ear was covered with grayish-brown growth. Dr. Bohling expects that when he returns to these fields, the husks will most likely be covered by very small, black fruiting bodies of the fungus scattered on the husks or embedded in cob tissues and kernels. Infected ears will be lightweight.
